From a very early stage in attending Alex’s classes, I realized that that the Alexander Technique was far more than posture and breathing, which in my case were affected by my deafness and everything having been a huge effort as a child. I had to learn to hear with a hearing aid and to talk. The frustration, constant effort and other experiences had become ingrained as a habit, which affected my whole outlook and wellbeing. These combined with the modern adult lifestyle and goal driven career affected the way I stood, breathed, how I behaved (being highly reactive) and thought. My posture was a dropped head (as a result of former low self esteem), slouching shoulders (as a result of carrying a heavy burden and also a lack of confidence), not standing evenly on both feet (old school playground habit of not wanting to stand out in the crowd) and very tense (using too much force, as well as anxiety and frustration).

With Alex’s very kind and patient teaching, I am learning to stand straight (stand tall with a backbone) without sagging shoulders and also to breath properly, which makes me feel stronger. It takes a long time and a lot of practice, to break the old lifetime habits and for the new ones to form. I always enjoy attending Alex’s classes and in the time that I have been learning the Alexander Technique, I have gained so much and feel a real change for the better. It is very powerful stuff, requiring an open mind and a willingness to accept the resulting changes. In my opinion it is a worthwhile investment in oneself. I am a much calmer and am much happier in myself now.

I came to Alex after suffering from migraine headaches for eighteen years.  As the symptoms were worsening and I relied more and more on prescription medication I decided I had reached a point where I needed to try and gain some control over the situation.

I knew very little about the Alexander Technique but associated it with 'posture control.' I felt the therapy could be helpful and decided to give it a go.

WIthin about three weeks of starting the weekly sessions with Alex, I felf a major improvement in the duration and frequency of the migraines.
